Editor/Photographer's note: This is part of a series of portraits of local woman who are tackling the notion of what is their inner superhero. This is meant to be fun, but also a meaningful glimpse into our lives and in this case the lives of ordinary women leading truly extraordinary lives in just being who they are and doing what they do. This is still just the beginning. There will be more as this project grows.
Debbie Peterson wrote about this project say "Early on, this spontaneous project between unknown Facebook friends sparked personal message comments like, 'Let’s just dress up like super heroes and see what happens.' That evoked subsequent statements such as these: 'I work best without a deadline, but with friends cheering me on,' and 'My Hulk hands have shipped,' as well as, 'Do you have your powers yet?'
I decided to get on board with this undeveloped and crazy super hero idea, because, it was reminiscent of my childhood. Back then, we didn’t need a fully thought-out agenda with written goals and objectives, or a 90-page strategic plan and progress reports. We just needed each other, going to the neighbor kid’s house, banging on the door and asking if so-and-so could come out to play. That’s what this is, and what appeals to me … and what scares me."
Debbie embraced the concept of really trying to have fun examining her inner strength.
"It got me thinking about my personal “heroism” and the child-like faith required to pull off heroic deeds. The Bible says (in part), 'love endures all things.'
I have so many questions about what that means, especially when special someones give up on you… Does that mean it never really was love?
I never want it said about me - that I gave up. That I quit on someone. That I used to be a quitter. Or a giver-upper on myself.
I think that’s what makes people give up on loving each other.
They think they don’t have what it takes (strength, endurance, courage, faith) to be there through the changes in someone’s life. Hope is lost in the muck and mire of me-ism.
All I can say about that, is this: Why would God tell us to love each other if He were not going to empower us to do so?
When we call on our own empty selves, of course we will fail. Let’s call upon the Author and Creator of all things, which is love. (Psalm 107:1)
'If at first you fail your deed, try again ’til you succeed.' ~Underdog
I don’t often think of myself as a hero, let alone a “super” one, so the only imaginable super hero that makes sense for me is Underdog.
Remember him?… the humble, lovable shoeshine boy who dons the cape whenever Ace Reporter, Sweet Polly Purebred sounds the alarm.
It’s a plane, it’s a bird… it’s a frog. No! It’s UNDERDOG!
His virtuous character traits of persistence and humility are really the only things he has going for him. And ironically, it’s all he needs to be the hero.
Something (or Someone) bigger than him does the rest.
Not a plane or bird or even a frog… just plain Underdog!
I am drawn to people (and animals) who cannot seem to behave. I am blessed (or cursed - depending upon your perspective) with the ability to see past the bad behavior to the hurting soul underneath. I guess it’s a “been there, done that” kind of scenario that plays out in my heart whenever I meet one of the “bad ones.”
Underdog personifies the ordinary in all of us and the ability to be extraordinary, if we simply believe."
