In Today's The Derrick and The News-Herald is my first written story since I started at the paper a little more than two month's ago. I have contributed to a couple news stories, but this was my first story. Its about a woman battling her weight and Lymphedema in hopes to get her life back. There is a fundraiser for her tomorrow (May 24) so she can see a specialist in hopes to get surgery to remove the large masses on her legs. Check out the Facebook event page here!
I am happy my editors took this story and ran with it and gave it good play on the bottom of the front page on Memorial Day weekend and then jumped it inside with two more photos. Click here for online story. May require subscription. |
I'm always impressed with how people can overcome situations. I know when I am faced with the slightest physical difficulties it seems to take all my will away, and I have been very lucky to have only minimal physical problems in my 49 years. Maria seems to have a strength even though she will repeatedly say she is done. She then gets up and excited when a friend comes by and says they are going for a ride somewhere. Instead of giving up and playing it safe in bed and at home, she risks her health in order to feel life.
Sadly she spends a lot of time in the hospital and getting treatments for infections.
She's got it rough, but as she says in this story.
"Let me prove I can fix myself," she said. "I just need a chance."
