"When I was a little girl both my mother and my aunt told me that women carry many secrets deep in their souls. And these secrets are usually kept to and beyond the grave. I wasn’t sure that I believed them, but as I journey to middle age and beyond, I can say that I too carry many secrets," Sue Mulvey explains.
"Most of those secrets I am whole heartedly ashamed of, and I know that no matter how hard I work or how much I give, I will never ease the pain I have caused. I can never erase the scars that I have given or received.
Those scars make me the vigilante I am.
Because of those scars, I fight for those who can’t fight for themselves. That said, it doesn’t mean I don’t pray on a daily basis for forgiveness… for redemption."
When Sue joined this group of Super-hero ladies doing this project, the first person she told was her 18 year old daughter, Kerianne, who is a lover of graphic novels. They talked about what super-heroes she might feel a connection with and that exemplified her struggles with her past and what she does now in the community to help others. They determined that she connected to the vigilante characters like Zorro, Batman and Arrow.
"I am also a fan of the story of redemption" she said.
She chose Arrow.
In the story of Arrow, the main character Oliver Queen seeks his own redemption from rich playboy spoiled brat to vigilante hero of the underclass.
As a vigilante Arrow was dedicated to fight for and protect the "underclass." Those not of power and or privilege.
Sue has dedicated the last 20 years of her career to the service of women and children. The past 4 years have been dedicated to the service of the children of Meadville.
Like Arrow who is torn between being a business man, brother, and son and his persona of protecting and fighting for those who cannot or don't know how to fight for themselves.
"I am torn between my professional commitments, being school nurse and founder and President of The WiNS Project, Inc.* and the needs of my family and children. Daily I am faced with the questions should I network for WiNS at a certain function, stay for the meeting after school, or should I take Leah to voice lessons and Kate to dance class? "
*WINS stands for Weekend Nutrition for Students, a program that provides nutritional items to children with a need for over the weekend in hopes that they will be better prepared at the start of each week for school. For more information contact [email protected]. The website is currently under construction but it will be winsproject.org. They also have a Wins Facebook page and weekly there I ask for a certain food donation. All donations can be sent to Second District Elementary School 1216 South Main Street Meadville PA 16335
Sue said that as Arrow's hero status grows in the community he struggles to come to grips with his past and the immense pressure to continue to do good work can be crushing.
"I understand this concept on every issue. Sometimes the mistakes I have made and the scars I have caused seem like a huge dark blanket so heavy and deep I’m not sure I can breathe. I fear I will forever be defined by them. Then as The WiNS Project grows, the pressure to continue is crushing me."
"I can’t breathe. I fear on a daily basis I will let these children down. I fear I will let my family down!
But she says that she is then told wonderful stories of how she is changing lives and how important this extra food is to a child or a family.
"And now I ask you all… aren’t we all on that mission?
