I covered an event a couple weekends back and when i posted pics from the week or two I had forgotten to post this one. I think when I am excited about photography the most I am willing to explore a story in ways I don't even really understand. What I mean by this is I'll try something even if I have no idea if it will make a good photograph. I think this might be the key to keeping myself fresh over the years(though not always!). I'm a story teller but not as gifted at it as many of the people I admire like David and Peter Turnley, Michael Williamson and Craig Walker(and many many others) so I find myself trying to honed my eyes, but also try to find ways of composing and compressing information like the photographers I admire do every single day(I swear every single frame!). This picture I was trying to tell a few things in one frame--one, it was windy, two it involved a remembrance for the Civil War veterans whose monument i wanted to frame with the blowing flags, three there was a ceremony with reenact ors and four--not many people really showed up even though it was a beautiful, albeit a tad chilly, spring day. And it is a patriotic event in Pennsylvania. If I got just a little more of the Venango County Courthouse in the frame I would have had another elements. My friend Jim Stefanucci and I used to talk about a good news photo having at least three elements compressed into the frame to give the reader solid knowledge of the story visually. I am always looking for those three elements, maybe 4 or 5.
