A portfolio is all about what you're applying for. If your portfolio is being sent to a newspaper or journalism publication than an image like this is really probably detrimental to your cause.
I took this picture for client, but my client was a nature conservancy. If I was applying for work in a conservancy this picture might be one I send.
The thing about a portfolio is you need to showcase your vision, your eye, the way you see pictures. I see pictures in many ways and can probably put together 4 to 6 distinctly different portfolios based on what I wanted to do for whoever I was sending my work to preview. I shoot pictures based on what interests me at the moment and therefore have a wide range.
If I were to apply to a newspaper who asked for a strong sports background I would lean heavy on sports images and hope they are good enough.
To me a good photograph isn't a based on a good subject, its based on communication. If your work communicates something to me beyond just the obvious then I am intrigued! So even a simple picture can be appealing if it really communicates something.
On instagram I follow a key few people who are incredible and consistent photographers with a vision. This is key. Vision. Show your strengths, but most important show your vision.
And understand what you're trying to do and who you're trying to do it for.
